Because
A free, browser-based editor for argument maps
No account needed. Your maps stay on your device or in your own Google Drive.
What Because is for
Because is an editor for argument visualizations — diagrams that display the logic of an argument. A visualization lays out a conclusion, the reasons offered for it, and the objections raised against it, so you can organize and navigate complex reasoning at a glance. Making the structure of an argument explicit encourages clearly articulated reasoning, and it makes intricate arguments far easier to discuss, evaluate, and teach.
In an argument map:
- green brackets group supporting reasons — co-premises that work together
- red brackets mark objections
- dashed borders mark implicit claims the author left unstated
What you can do with it
- Create and edit argument maps with keyboard-first controls, then
save them as
.mupfiles on your device or in Google Drive. - Open existing MindMup argument maps unchanged — Because renders them with the same engine MindMup used.
- Print maps or save them as PDF for handouts and feedback.
Because was built for teaching philosophy and critical thinking, in the tradition of the argument-visualization materials at philmaps.com, after the retirement of the MindMup argument-visualization service. It is free to use and has no accounts and no ads. Anonymous usage statistics help us improve it — your map content is never collected (see the privacy policy).
